China's giant panda population on the rise, off the endangered species list
Chinese authorities say in a statement that the giant pandas
in China are no longer the world's most endangered species. He was commenting
on the success of a program to conserve these giant pandas in nature reserves,
which was launched with the intervention of zoologists in the country.
Today, the population of these giant pandas in China's
forests has risen to 1,800.
However, the risk to these giant pandas remains high,
according to the head of China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment,
Department of Nature and Environmental Conservation. According to the Red Data
Book of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in 2016,
these giant pandas were listed as more endangered than any other endangered
species.
But even over the past five years, China has made a strong
commitment to grow its own giant panda population in the country. A spokesman
for China's Foreign Ministry said it was "good news" that China's
giant pandas had been declared an endangered species. "The fact that these
pandas have good mountainous terrain to live in and access to clean drinking
water is one of the reasons for this significant increase in their
population," he said.
